Mockingjay, Part 1: The trailer so amazing, it needed its own trailer!
The OFFICIAL Mockingjay: Part 1 trailer is here! I am a little baffled by the fact that they advertised for this advertisement, but because I love this series, I will disregard this blatant capitalistic ploy for now.
We get our first real glimpses of District 13 and all I can say is: holy gray. I knew about the greyness of district thirteen, but seeing it is a whole different story. You can just feel the regimented nature leaping off the screen. It is definitely going to be interesting to see Katniss in that setting.
Also, I am really excited to see that they did not just drop Effie completely out of the movies like they did the books. Show of hands, who else always wondered what the heck happened to her? I always assumed they killed her off like Cinna, but that always made me really sad. Since they down played the prep team in the films, it makes sense that they would need Effie to make a semi-prep team for Katniss in 13.
This makes me wonder if they are going to waste any time on the period that Katniss completely falls apart after they arrive in 13. It definitely was not represented in the trailer which makes me think they might leave it out. I guess it makes sense though, in order to just move the story along. I am really looking forward to seeing the scenes of Katniss out with the people in District 8. I love when she shot down a ship with an arrow in the book; it looks just as awesome in the film!

Adaptation Mini #1: From Page To Screen – The Interviews (Part 1)
Kendyl and first-time host Nicole sit down to talk about some interviews Kendyl did at the From Page To Screen festival earlier this year. The interview with screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (Salmon Fishing in the Yeman, Catching Fire) gets the girls excited for the new Hunger Games installment as well as discussing the role of screenwriters in film making. The interview with English and Film lecturer at the University of Exeter, Dr. Corinna Wagner about DH Lawrence’s Women in Love and the 1969 adaptation leads into quite the discussion about how relationships are viewed today.

It’s been a long wait, but finally Finnick Odair has been cast for next year’s Catching Fire. There have been so many names flying around lately, but Lionsgate has finally narrowed it down to one. And the part of the flirtatious fisherman goes to…
Sam Claflin!
You may recognize him as Snow White’s childhood friend from Snow White and the Huntsman or maybe as Philip from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
If you’ve been listening to our podcasts, it will be no surprise to you that this is a welcome bit of casting for the Adaptation team. I hadn’t considered this before now, but I’m certainly not disappointed and I think that Claflin will be able to bring the right attitude to the role.

‘Mockingjay’ Officially Split in Two, Release Dates Announced
While all of us have been waiting with bated breath to see who would be cast in the newest installment of the Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Lionsgate have been hard at work making decisions about the future. Mockingjay, the third book in the trilogy and the epic conclusion to the story of Katniss Everdeen and Panem, will be coming out on November 21, 2014, but that’s not all.

And right at the top is Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee. We knew that he had been offered the role, and this confirms that he has accepted and is officially the Head Gamemaker for the 75th Hunger Games.
The app itself is definitely worth a browse. It has boxes for every tribute that they have yet to cast and clickable boxes for the characters that they already have, where you can learn about the character and the actor playing the role. What I found the most interesting is that there are two unlabeled boxes, one with a female silhouette and the other with a male.
I’ve been trying to think about who other than the tributes need to be cast for this film, and I came up with a few ideas. Spoilers, kinda (highlight to see text): There are the two runaways headed for District 13 that Katniss meets in the woods, possibly a brief glimpse of President Coin at the end, the whistling man from District 11 who gets shot and the Head Peacekeeper of District 12 who whips Gale.
Who do you think the blank boxes are for? My guess is that if they are unlabeled it’s because the name might be too spoiler-filled.

Lionsgate Has Chosen Its Tribute: Jena Malone Offered Part of Johanna
Last week rumors were flying about who was the front runner for the part of Johanna Mason in the upcoming Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire. Today, the suspense, about Johnna at least, is close to ending.
It has been confirmed that Jena Malone was offered the part and is now in negotiations. Although this isn’t technically a confirmation that she will be playing Johanna, my guess is that this wouldn’t have been confirmed unless Lionsgate expected smooth sailing. Especially since the part will involve a contract for not just Catching Fire but also both parts of Mockingjay.
Malone has grown up on screen (remember her as the over-dramatic Anna in Stepmom?) and has a load of accomplishments under her belt. Most recently she played Nancy in the miniseries Hatfields & McCoys, but as we are talking about the badass Johnna Mason, I feel compelled to bring up her performance in Sucker Punch. Definitely Johanna-worthy.
I’m not opposed to this casting, though I will admit I was hoping for someone a little less well known. To me, Jena has a big presence that is completely her own. That is a great thing to have in Hollywood, but for a character that fans already feel like they know, it might be a handicap. Still, if she has the acting chops that I think she does, she’ll be able to pull it off.

No sooner had we posted the last Catching Fire casting update than it was discovered that, not only was Mia Wasikowska never considering the role of Johanna, but she would not be able to due to previous commitments. Do not fret my little fans; this is not the only rumor that has surfaced in the last few hours.
Axe Toting Tree from District 7, Who Will it Be? Catching Fire Casting Scoop #2!
Here is another casting scoop for all you Hunger Games fans: Johanna Mason. You know her; she is the axe throwing, tree costume wearing, bad ass from district 7 who teams up with Katniss and Peeta in the 75th Hunger Games. So who will play her? Well that remains to be seen, though the director has been in talks with not only well known actresses, but some undiscovered talent as well. Who are these women, you ask?
Catching Fire Casting Scoop!
For those Hunger Games fans who are dying to know who is going to be playing who in the next installment, Catching Fire, well here is a little bit of a scoop for you. No, sorry, this is not a casting for Finnick Odair sadly, but Plutarch Heavensbee might just have a winner.
Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been offered the role of the new Gamemaker. Hoffman, who recently has played in Moneyball and The Ides of March, has a very interesting pedigree. The movies that I have seen him in have been as varied in theme as I can think of. I am curious to see how he will bring this multi-layered character to life.
