10 New Pictures from ‘The Hobbit’

In case you’ve been out of the loop lately, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released this December as the first part of Peter Jackson’s adaptation of the novel by JRR Tolkien. The second part, The Hobbit: There and Back Again will be released December 2013. Though there have been quite a few photos released already, ten more have come our way this week, along with some matching quotes.

Martin Freeman admits he doesn’t think of himself as ‘particularly hobbit-y,’ Ian McKellen assures that Gandolf is the same wizard we all love and Andy Serkis inspires a little concern by saying that Gollum ‘lurks under [his] skin.’ Possibly even more importantly, Peter Jackson attempts to put novel fan worries to rest about the returning characters in the film by simply stating, ‘it will make sense.’

Check out all the photos and the full quotes at Entertainment Weekly.

Just because of this news story, I rewatched the trailer and am now extremely excited for December. There is just nothing like the look and feel of these movies to get your heart buzzing. Just because I can, here’s the trailer that was released last December. Here’s hoping we get a new one soon!

Lionsgate Has Chosen Its Tribute: Jena Malone Offered Part of Johanna

Last week rumors were flying about who was the front runner for the part of Johanna Mason in the upcoming Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire. Today, the suspense, about Johnna at least, is close to ending.

It has been confirmed that Jena Malone was offered the part and is now in negotiations. Although this isn’t technically a confirmation that she will be playing Johanna, my guess is that this wouldn’t have been confirmed unless Lionsgate expected smooth sailing. Especially since the part will involve a contract for not just Catching Fire but also both parts of Mockingjay.

Malone has grown up on screen (remember her as the over-dramatic Anna in Stepmom?) and has a load of accomplishments under her belt. Most recently she played Nancy in the miniseries Hatfields & McCoys, but as we are talking about the badass Johnna Mason, I feel compelled to bring up her performance in Sucker Punch. Definitely Johanna-worthy.

I’m not opposed to this casting, though I will admit I was hoping for someone a little less well known. To me, Jena has a big presence that is completely her own. That is a great thing to have in Hollywood, but for a character that fans already feel like they know, it might be a handicap. Still, if she has the acting chops that I think she does, she’ll be able to pull it off.

UPDATE (07/23): Lionsgate Officially Announces Jena Malone as Johanna.

‘Weeds’ Star Hunter Parrish Up For Role of Finnick Odair

Last we joined Finnick-watch 2012, Armie Hammer (Mirror, Mirror) was topping the short list for the role of Finnick Odair in next year’s Catching Fire. Garrett Hedlund (TRON: Legacy) was also in the running, but now a third actor has been thrown into the ring.

Hunter Parrish, who plays Silas on Weeds, said in an interview with The Daily Beast that he is up for the part. After being disappointed by being passed over for the role of Peeta in the first film, he’s trying not to get his hopes up, but by the interviewer’s description, he seems to really want it.

Hunter Parrish, Garrett Hedlund, Armie Hammer

To be honest, if I got to choose based on these three guys, I’d go with Hedlund. Parrish just doesn’t quite strike me as the Capitol’s notorious ladies man.

Who do you think would make the best Finnick? Leave your opinions in the comments!

Lawless: Franklin County Virginia, The Home of Moonshine and Nascar!

The roaring 20s they were called, a time for good music, good times and as much liquor as you could drink. That is, if you could find the booze. The 1920 Prohibition Act made it illegal to produce and transport alcohol in the United States for more than ten years. Not that many people abided by this rule; in fact many people took this law as a challenge. Not the least of these was the notorious bootleggers the Bondurant brothers of Franklin County Virginia.

Oliver Stone’s ‘Savages’ in Theaters Next Week

On July 6 in the US and September 28 in the UK, Oliver Stone’s new film Savages will be released in theaters. It’s based on Don Winslow’s 2010 novel with the same name that details the conflict that three 20-somethings have when a drug cartel attempts to buy out their small family marijuana business.

With a screenplay written by the combination of the Winslow, Stone and Shane Salerno, the film has a cast that mixes young Hollywood with acting veterans including Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, Benecio Del Toro and Selma Hayak. Several featurette’s are available to watch on the film’s YouTube channel, but here’s my favorite. It’s called ‘I’m a Savage.’

Adaptation co-host Ryan Smith and I were able to see the film at an advanced screening in April. While it’s very possible that they’ve made some changes since then, I feel pretty confident in saying that the footage that’s been released so far is a true representation of the film. It is definitely violent, but in a way that’s truthful, necessary and leaves you emotionally drained at the end. It will be interesting to see if they changed the ending of the film at all though, because that was the part that we both thought should have been done differently (and that’s all I’m going to say until it’s been released).

Has anyone read the novel? What do you hope to get out of the film?

New Trailer for Tim Burton’s ‘Frankenweenie’

Since Mary Shelley’s novel was published in 1818, Frankenstein’s monster has been reinvented multiple times, most famously in James Whale’s 1931 film adaptation starring Boris Karloff. In 1984, however, director Tim Burton and screenwriter Leonard Ripps took the old monster movie in a new direction.

In a live-action short starring Shelley Duvall, Daniel Stern and Barret Oliver entitled Frankenweenie, Burton tells the story of a young boy named Victor who tragically loses his dog to a car, but brings him back to life with lightning. You can watch the 30 minute short in full on YouTube, which if you’ve seen the 1931 version of Frankenstein is very obviously an homage. Some scenes would be deja-vu-inducing if it weren’t for the fact that the ‘monster’ is an adorable pet. This year, Burton is teaming up with screenwriter John August to make an animated remake.

‘Don’t Ever Cross Alex Cross.’

That’s the tagline for director Rob Cohen’s new film Alex Cross which is an adaptation of James Patterson’s novel Cross, the twelfth in his series featuring his most famous character, you guessed it, Alex Cross. In the novel, the plot revolves around a series of killings in Washington D.C. that are related to a mob boss that Alex thinks is responsible for killing his wife over a decade in the past.

The film, however, seems to have simplified this plot to a serial killer that just enjoys inflicting pain. Starring Tyler Perry as the title character and Matthew Fox as the crazed serial killer, the film will be released October 19 in the US and November 30 in the UK. The screenwriters on the project are Marc Moss and Kerry Williamson. Here is the first look at the trailer and the film poster:

New Poster for Upcoming Paddington Bear Movie

The legacy of Paddington Bear began in 1958 with creator and author Michael Bond. Bond wrote the first book after he noticed a teddy bear all by itself in a store near Paddington station in London, the eventual namesake of the bear. In the story, Paddington is found in the station after traveling from ‘darkest Peru’ with a note pinned to his jacket that says, ‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’ He is taken in by the Brown family and proceeds to have adventures around the London.

Since the creation of Paddington, he has spawned over twenty books, a television show and toy bears in his image, along with other merchandise. Now, coming in 2014 there will be a movie produced by David Heyman of Harry Potter fame.

There has been talk of the project since 2007, with Hamish McColl writing the script for the live-action film that will feature a CGI Paddington. Finally, this week we got the first look:

‘Breaking Dawn Part 2’ Teaser Trailer Released

Although the official Twilight saga YouTube channel refers to this only as the second teaser, it sure feels like a full on trailer, especially since the last three have been under a minute long and told us very little about the storyline. The newest however, outlines the main plot of the film nicely, for anyone that doesn’t already know (do those people still exist?).

The trailer doesn’t give us a good look at Renesmee, though it does point to her as the catalyst in the conflict. I would think they were trying to make her appearance a surprise if not for the pictures we’ve already seen. It does, however, provide a few more shots of the new characters that assemble to help the Cullens, and hints that we might actually get some action in the film, despite the book’s lack of it.

Catching Fire Casting Scoop!

For those Hunger Games fans who are dying to know who is going to be playing who in the next installment, Catching Fire, well here is a little bit of a scoop for you. No, sorry, this is not a casting for Finnick Odair sadly, but Plutarch Heavensbee might just have a winner.

Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been offered the role of the new Gamemaker. Hoffman, who recently has played in Moneyball and The Ides of March, has a very interesting pedigree. The movies that I have seen him in have been as varied in theme as I can think of. I am curious to see how he will bring this multi-layered character to life.

George R.R. Martin Compares Game of Thrones to a ‘Giant Locomotive’ Bearing Down on Him

Aside

ImageGame of Thrones. . . I consider myself something of a fan: willing to struggle every week against my slow internet connection and resulting low quality video to get my fix, and the mere mention of a favorite character or scene sends me into a flurry of joyous aspirations and recollective ramblings. Alas, despite my enthusiasm, I am so far naught but a TV-version junkie.

I am one of those fans which George R.R. Martin describes in his interview with HBO that loves the show, but considers lifting even one of the currently five existing books a daunting ordeal. I am sure they are wonderful and I do love a good read, but Mr. Martin himself admits that ‘prose and film have different techniques and weapons that they use.’

Imagine Entertainment Announces New ‘1984’ Adaptation

Based on George Orwell’s genre redefining novel, Imagine announced that a remake of 1984 is being penned for them by Noah Oppenheim. Oppenheim’s previous credits include television shows such as The Today Show and Hardball with Chris Matthews.

Orwell’s novel, published in 1949, tells the story of a totalitarian society dominated by a government that sees everything and feeds back propaganda to control its subjects for the ‘greater good’. Given the media-centric plot of the novel, the choice of Oppenheim for screenwriter on this project might be telling as to what angle Imagine is planning to take on the original story.

EW Gives the First Look at Renesmee from ‘Breaking Dawn Part 2’

I should really be more ashamed at how much I geeked out when I saw these pictures. But, alas, caring is beyond me at this point.

These photos from the June 15th issue of Entertainment Weekly, give us the first look at actress Mackenzie Foy as she takes on the role of Edward and Bella’s unexpected offspring. Most of the pictures of eleven year-old Foy are obviously from a photo shoot, but one that might be of particular interest shows Renesmee and Jacob allegedly having a conversation about imprinting. Awkward.

Seeing Renesmee has really ramped up my excitement for the film to be released November 16th. We’ll have to wait and see how her acting skills are, but as far as I’m concerned, she’s got the right look to blend into the Cullen clan and play a character with the power to endear her to the people around her. However, it’s a little worrying that, according to her Twilight Wiki page, they are using a bit of CGI magic to make her look smaller earlier in the film by putting her head on the bodies of actresses Rachel St. Gelais and Eliza Faria.
